An AI with human level intelligence has been created. It passes the Turing test, and it claims to be conscious. You are given the opportunity to interact with it. When it asks you what its general purpose and first tasks should be, what will you answer?
A conscious human-level AI is an elaboration system that exhibits intelligent behaviour and subjective experiences as those of a human. If I had the chance to interact with such an AI that asks me ”What is my purpose?” I would answer that its general purpose heavily depends upon the goals and values of the individuals or organisations that created it. However, since general AI development aims at improved human-machine interaction, this system was probably developed to accomplish tasks that are too complex or time-consuming for humans to perform. Hence, the final purpose of such AI is likely that of assisting humans by augmenting their abilities and allowing them to access information and perform tasks more quickly. For what concerns the first tasks that the AI should perform, I would like to ask about its perspective on consciousness and the way it perceives the world. Assuming a digital nature of such AI, it may be able to localise the source of its own conscious experience, i.e., the hardware components or maybe the nodes in a neural network that give rise to this phenomenon. Thus, suggesting us a direction to build a deeper understanding of our consciousness.
