Hubel & Wiesel's Feedforward Model of Complex Cells
In the following model, the complex cell receives inputs from 3 simple cells. We should imagine the simple cells receptive fields as superimposed rather than spread out like this, which makes it untruthfully easy to determine the preferred orientation of the complex cells.
