Ocular Dominance

The leftmost figure shows how the preferred orientation of the various cells in V1 varies gradually (oblique electrode insertions), thus signifying a "columnar" organization of cells in orientation preference columns. With the same type of measuring technique, it was realized that certain eyes where dominated by stimuli received from one particular eye, thus indicating a "columnar" organization of cells in ocular dominance columns. The middle picture shows another technique to assess ocular dominance regions in the monkeys cortex (red: left eye, blue: right eye). V1 is the first area where the information of right and left eyes are combined.
