What's the "f" in fMRI?

  • MRI = Magnetic Resonance Imaging
    • Non-invasive imaging technique that employs principles of magnetic resonance to visualise different tissue types.
    • Anatomical imaging: usually one image acquired; slow (minutes) but accurate (sub-mm spatial resolution)
  • fMRI = Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • Employs special sequences that are:
    • sensitive to blood oxygenation (see later)
    • fast to acquire (whole brain in approx. 2-3 seconds)
  • Timeseries: Numerous images that represent timecourse of blood oxygenation during experimental task.
